A Separation from the Ordinary

Although I am not keen on writing movie recommendations for films that win major awards and would much rather stick to the obscure, I am afraid my marriage will embody the title of the 2012 Academy Award winning Best Foreign Language Film, if I remain stubborn.

A Separation is a film showing the family and societal dynamics in Iran. From the opening scene, you will be instantly attracted by the opportunity to look inside one of the most impenetrable and complex nations in the Middle East. Even though the movie takes place in the very foreign country of Iran, there is something about this story that is surprisingly familiar and relatable. I truly love a story that demands multiple perspectives and forces the observer to ask, "what would I have done." Three weeks after watching this movie I still find myself asking this question. The realness and grit grips you in such a way that you cannot help but transform into a key role in the movie - a judge. As a very critical judge, I can guarantee that you will remain seated until all the credits have rolled and the picture is black, just waiting to make your final verdict.

If you are in the mood for a very real and deep story with excellent acting, I recommend you check out A Separation

Now playing!
