Taste of Turkey - Menemen

No scrambled eggs or omelet can compare in taste and texture with the Turkish version of the breakfast egg dish. Breakfast is very important in Turkey, and Menemen is often on the table. Menemen is simple yet delicious. It is juicy, tender, and very nutricious. Although the best Menemen I’ve ever had was prepared by my Turkish friend’s Mom, you don’t have to be from Turkey to cook and enjoy this amazing dish. Be careful though - as soon as you try Menemen, you risk falling in love with this country and its delightful, exquisite cuisine.

Ingredients:

4 eggs
1 cubanelle pepper, chopped bite size
4-5 medium tomatoes, chopped bite size
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
salt & pepper

Directions:
Heat the oil on a large non-stick pan. Then lightly fry the cubanelle pepper for about 2 minutes on medium-high heat. Then add tomatoes, salt and pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes over low-medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are soft.

Whisk the eggs in a bowl and pour into the pan. Keep stirring periodically until the eggs are just firm enough (still moist and not as dry as scrambled eggs). It’s important not to overcook as Menemen should be very juicy. Serve immediately with bread. Yam!

Here is an alternative recipe of Menemen that I found on the Almost Turkish Recipes blog.

  1. In Georgia we have the same thing, but we add Georgian cheese to it. Tastes like heaven, so delicious! You can try with feta cheese!

    1. Anna - That's definitely an option to add feta cheese. I think, though, you have to be very careful not to overpower with the strong feta cheese taste. Although, I must say, I love feta :)
