Taste of Russia - Caviar

Caviar is the most traditional Russian delicacy. It's something that tzars had on their tables during feasts.

We have red (salmon roe) and black (sturgeon roe) caviar.  Some people say that the black one is more valuable, but I like the red caviar better. In fact, I love it!

First off, It's not raw fish eggs. It's processed and salted so it's very safe to eat.

Caviar is considered to be a luxury food and is quite expensive. Luckily, it's sold in small cans (140 grams) that cost about 300 Rubles, or $10, each. You can find caviar in the US but it will probably be more expensive there.

You don't need to eat a lot of caviar to enjoy its unique salty taste and delicate texture.

In Russia, people serve it on a slice of white bread over a thin spread of butter. Caviar is a common treat at family holidays like weddings and birthdays or at big holidays, the New Year's for example. In my opinion, it's never a bad time for some caviar.

Take a bite with me!
